Nursing
Our comprehensive nursing services provide for all our patients' needs. Please visit the links below to learn more about our services
Acute Care
If patients require a hospital stay, it is our goal to make that stay as pleasant as possible. There are no restrictions on visiting hours or the age of visitors.
What Type of Room is Available?
Our newly remodeled patient rooms are all private for your comfort. Rooms have spacious bathrooms and are furnished for the comfort of the patient and family and visitors.
What Amenities are Provided?
Flat screen cable televisions and clock radios are also provided in every room. Wireless internet service is available if you choose to bring a laptop computer. A sun room is provided for use by patients and their families as well. Phones are available at every bedside for patient use. Each patient will be given a direct dial phone number on admission to be shared with family and friends. Patients can also be reached by calling (402) 367-1200 and asking for the patient by name.
Clergy
Clergy from Butler County routinely make visits to the hospital to provide for our patients' spiritual needs upon their request.
We'll Answer Your Questions
As a patient, if you have any questions or concerns during your stay, we ask that you speak with your nurse. We will do our best to accommodate your requests in accordance with your physician's orders.
Emergency Services
Patients are able to seek care 24 hours a day in our emergency department. A physician from the Butler County Clinic, P.C., is on call at all times.
Newly Remodeled
The Emergency Room was recently remodeled for patient comfort and staff convenience. A new Cardiac Monitoring system was also installed. In addition, a new waiting room was completed adjacent to the ER and Outpatient areas.
Staff Training
Butler County Health Care Center staff and physicians are actively involved in the CPR, airway management, and defibrillation recertification of area Emergency Medical Technicians. Our hospital offers CPR training to EMT's and the general public. Last year our CPR instructors Sheryl Meister and Cindy Yound, held several classes to train others how to save a live with CPR. If you are interested in learning this lifesaving technique, call Central Communtiy College--Platte Campus at 1-800-642-1083 to schedule a class.
Transport Ambulance
For patients requiring care beyond our means, the hospital owns and operates a transport ambulance. Certified ambulance drivers are on call 24 hours a day. Patients can quickly be transferred to Lincoln, Omaha and Columbus, while continuing to receive care from nursing personnel. This transport ambulance routinely makes about 100 transport trips each year. The hospital has provided this transport service for more than 15 years. The hospital does accept Medicare reimbursement for this service. The ambulance is operated on a not-for profit basis, just like the hospital. If the hospital did not provide this service, the burden could fall on local, volunteer rescue squads. The other alternative would be to contract this service from a for-profit ambulance service 30 miles away.
Obstetrics & Newborn Care
Our obstetrics department provides labor and delivery services, C-sections and a newborn nursery. We routinely deliver about 100 babies each year.
Birthing Suite
New parents can enjoy their birthing experience in a comfortable, home-like environment. A beautiful birthing suite is available for moms and their partners to labor and deliver in. The room is private with a television and full bathroom. At the bedside you will find equipment to monitor the heart rate of your baby during labor. Our nursing staff is also available for support and coaching if needed.
Anesthesia
Whether or not to have anesthesia is a matter between you and your physician. Your wishes will be respected and the decision is a flexible one. All types of anesthesia are available upon your doctor's request and anesthesia providers are available to respond to your needs. In the event you would require a Cesarean Section, the surgical suites are located nearby.
After the Birth
After your baby is born, he or she will be monitored, weighed and measured, and given needed medications or assistance in the neonatal intensive care unit. We will also test your baby's hearing with a
Natus Newborn Hearing Screener. Moms that choose to breastfeed may do so as soon after birth as possible. Not breastfeeding? Your baby will still be returned to you for some quiet, unhurried time together. This is the time to initiate bonding and to respond to the loving attachment already forming between you and your baby.
Recovery
Here, the goal is relaxation, convenience and education on caring for yourself and your newborn. While your baby may need to make short trips to the nursery, "rooming in" is a popular option. Your baby can stay with you in your room as long as you like so that you can begin caring for him or her right away. Need some rest? Our nurses are happy to care for your new little one in the nursery while mom catches a nap.
Newborn Hearing Screen
Hearing impairment is the most common disability at birth. Every year nearly 24,000 babies are born in the United States with hearing impairment.
"For children not screened for hearing loss at birth, the average age of identification is 2-1/2 to 3 years of age, well after the most critical period for language development has passed," explained Sue Birkel, Director of Patient Care at BCHCC. "Many people do not realize that hearing aids and therapy are available for infants as soon as they are a few weeks old."
Research shows that infants identified at birth for hearing impairment have a greater opportunity to develop within the normal range of language comprehension, verbal expression and psycho-social development, than do children identified later. The hospital's screener tests the baby's entire hearing pathway, recording brainwave responses to a series of soft clicks and compares them to a pattern of normal responses. The testing is conducted while the baby sleeps, is noninvasive and takes from two to 15 minutes to complete. Parents have the results of the tests prior to discharge from the hospital.
"With our newborn hearing screening program, we can effectively address the many needs of children born with hearing loss and extend help to their families," said Birkel. "Having identified those infants who are hearing impaired, we can quickly provide the appropriate medical, audiological and educational follow-up to give the newborns the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential. This is a valuable program."
Skilled Nursing Care
Butler County Health Care Center provides acute and transitional care, and ambulance transfer service. We seek to promote good health practices through wellness education and fitness activities. Our transitional care services are oriented to restore each patient to his or her highest level of independence and comfort. We offer nursing and professional support services to achieve this level of quality care.
Our Purpose
Transitional care serves to provide continued rehabilitation services and skilled nursing. Transitional care is provided to patients who are awaiting nursing home placement or until arrangements can be made for care in the patient's home. We develop social as well as physical activities based on each individuals' needs and strengths. Input from both the patient and family is appreciated and encouraged.
Types of Transitional Care:
There are two types of transitional care, skilled care and self-pay. Your level of care is determined by your physician.
- Skilled Care -- When a doctor certifies that you need skilled nursing or rehabilitation services on a daily basis, the hospital can receive reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid or other insurance companies. It is very important to remember that the patient must need skilled nursing or rehab on a daily basis in order for Medicare or Medicaid to pay. If you have other insurance, you will need to confirm coverage with your company.
- Self Pay -- When a patient does not meet criteria for skilled care, the patient becomes financially responsible. The daily charge includes nursing care, room and board. There are additional charges for services and supplies such as medications. Medicare may make partial payment on physical therapy, x-rays, lab fees, and one visit per week by your physician.
Outside Support
Family and friends can make all the difference when it comes to helping patients recover. We encourage visits from family, friends, and patient's personal pastor, priest, or other clergy member. If their personal clergy is unavailable to visit, we will assist in introducing the patient to our local clergy. A chapel is available for use in the sun room as well. Family may be asked to provide the patient with transportation for medical appointments outside of the hospital.
Surgical Services
Many surgical procedures that once required a hospital stay can now be performed on an outpatient basis. Patients are able to check in in the morning, and in most cases, go home that same day.
Our surgery department provides surgical services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Patients scheduled for surgery are asked to come in a day or two prior to their procedure to complete any necessary paperwork and receive pre-op instructions from a registered nurse. The surgery department works cooperatively with the recovery room, the sterile processing unit, and anesthesia department. The day of surgery, patients report to the nurse's station, where care is coordinated throughout their stay.
Some surgeries that are routinely performed on an outpatient basis include:
- tonsillectomy
- insertion of eartubes
- knee scopes
- carpal tunnel surgery
- laparascopic gall bladder surgery
- hernia repair
- upper gastrointestinal endoscopies
- appendetomy
Surgical procedures requiring a longer stay in the hospital include:
- hysterectomy
- bowel resection
- cesarean section
For more information on Surgical Services, the Outpatient Services Department can assist you with any questions you might have. Please call 402-367-1265.
Diagnostic Services
Our comprehensive diagnostic services provides for nearly all our patients' needs, without traveling far from home. Please visit the links below to learn more about our services.
Laboratory
Our hospital owns and operates its own full service lab to perform a variety of laboratory services.
Some of the blood tests performed include:
-
Blood Lipids - this test provides an important look at LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides
-
Blood Chemistry Tests - these tests evaluate liver and kidney function; electrolyte balance; blood sugar level; protein and nutritional status
-
Thyroid Function (FreeT4, TSH) - these tests check the level of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream, which control your body's metabolism
-
PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen) - screen for the presence of prostate disorders
-
Cardiac Marker tests - quickly diagnose or rule out a heart attack
-
Complete Blood Count - this test determines is anemia is present. A white blood cell count is taken, as elevated levels can indicate the presence of infection. The Abbott CellDyn 3200 is able to measure and differentiate thousands of blood cells in less than 2 minutes. The CellDyn uses laser technology to count and categorize cells. This technology is especially helpful with cancer patients undergoing treatments, and with patients suffering from infections and other blood disorders.
-
Blood Transfusion Service - test for blood type and compatibility with donor blood products for transfusions
-
Coagulation Tests - to monitor anticoagulant therapy or diagnose bleeding disorders
-
Urinalysis

We thank you for choosing Butler County Health Care Center as your health care provider. If you have questions about your bill at any time, please call our billing department. Our goal is to provide the best health care at the lowest possible cost. In order to accomplish this goal, the hospital must remain in strong financial condition by receiving payment for the services that we provide. We will do everything that we can do to obtain payment from your insurance carrier(s). However, the basic responsibility for payment belongs to the patient.
We now accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

Billing Policies
It is important to note that no tax dollars are needed for the operation of the Butler County Health Care Center. Although this is a county hospital, there is no assurance that the county would be either willing or able to subsidize the hospital if needed. We are a hospital, but we are also a business. It is our job to provide our service area with quality, low-cost health care. We take pride in knowing that we provide this without burdening our taxpayers. For our hospital to remain in good financial standing, patients need to provide payment for the services we provide.
If you do not have insurance
You have the right to receive an appropriate medical screening examination, necessary stabilizing treatment, and if necessary, an appropriate transfer to another facility even if you do not have medical insurance, or you are not entitled to Medicare or Medicaid, or you cannot pay. Patients that do not have insurance will have their bills sent directly to them, or to the party responsible (guarantor) for payment of the bill. - Corvel
- Medicare
- Medicaid

How we receive payment from Insurance Carriers, Medicare & Medicaid
We will forward your bill to your insurance carrier for payment. This includes Medicare and Medicaid. If you receive a bill from us before we have heard from your insurance carrier, the amount submitted to your insurance carrier will show up in the Insurance Pending column on your bill.
If you have multiple insurance carriers
Some people have more than one insurance carrier, such as a supplement to Medicare. We will submit your bills to additional insurance companies for you. However, we will wait to hear from your primary insurance carrier before doing so. After we have received word from all insurance carriers involved, you will need to pay the remaining balance. On your bill, you will be able to see all payments made by your insurance carrier(s). The amount you owe will be listed in the Patient Pay column and in the Amount Due Now box.
Payment Plans
Payment in full is expected as indicated on the statements. If payment in full cannot be made, you will need to call our billing department. We may make arrangements with you for full payment within 2 to 6 months. If you are unable to pay the balance in full within six months, you will be referred to the bank loan program. Charity care applications are available for patients who do not have the financial means to pay. There are certain eligibility requirements for charity care, please call for more information.
Collections Policy
Accounts will be reviewed at approximately 60 days after discharge. If there has been no payment, we will follow up to determine reasons for nonpayment and resolve those issues. If the balance remaining on your bill is your responsibility, and no payment has been made in 60 days, you will receive a letter stating the past-due nature of your account. After 90 days, you will receive a letter from our collection agency. At this point, your bill can still be paid to the hospital. If we do not hear from you, your account will be turned over to the collection agency. At this point, you will need to pay the collection agency directly. We will no longer accept payments on that account.
If you have questions please contact Charlene Yindrick by email at cyindrick@bchccnet.org or at (402) 367-1352.

Our Purpose
To enhance your care at the hospital by adding a special touch and any extra help we may provide. The Butler County Health Care Center Volunteers were founded in January of 1992. After a survey was completed, the volunteers were officially formed to provide service to the hospital. Associate membership is available for those who do not have time or cannot physically participate.
How You Can Help
The volunteer's mission is to assist the Butler County Health Care Center in providing service to patients and making their stay a comfortable one. There are many ways in which you can volunteer. The important thing is to find something you like to do and let us know. We will work with you to find something you feel comfortable doing. We want to be sure that you enjoy your volunteering times with us! Last year, our volunteers donated 3,120 hours of their time to the hospital.
A Variety of Services...
- Gift Shop - We would love to have you help us run the Volunteer Gift & Candy Shop!
- Baking - Special baking projects for fundraising events is one opportunity to volunteer.
- Crafts - These items have the power to make people smile! Items such as baby caps can be donated to the gift shop.
- Patient Services - To be of service to our patients and make their stay as positive as it can be is a noble mission. Visiting with patients is another way to volunteer. This may include activities like delivering mail, playing cards, reading, playing games, and staffing the refreshment cart.
- Handy Man Work - There may be opportunities to help around the facility.
- Holiday Decorating - To brighten the spirits of patients and staff during the holidays, we like to decorate just as you would at home. Help is always appreciated to put up or take down decorations.
- Clerical - Help our office staff with filing, sorting, telephone duties, etc. If you miss this type of work, come lend us a hand!
- Supplies - Hospital supplies need to be tagged with identification stickers for tracking purposes. This is a big help and not physically demanding.
- Sewing - You can volunteer from home by sewing or mending hospital items.
- Gardening - Yard work and tending to flowers and shrubs is another area that you may love to volunteer your talents. This spring we planted flowers and plants outside the hospital entrance!

Become a Volunteer!
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact any of the board members at the top of the page. We also have Associate Memberships if you want to help but do not have the time or physical capacity. Please call the hospital at (402) 367-1200 if you have any questions. We look forward to volunteering with you!
