Butler County Health Care Center has teamed up with Aquinas High School to provide their student athletes with a cooperative athletic trainer program. This new program is different than most high school athletic training programs because an athletic trainer will be at all sporting practices and home varsity sporting events. “Butler County Health Care Center felt this was a good opportunity to improve the current athletic training at the local high schools. Our athletic trainer program is designed to increase the accessibility of a trainer to the student athletes, while maintaining a connection to their local health care provider,” explains Don Naiberk, CEO.
Butler County Health Care Center has entered into an agreement with BryanLGH. The athletic trainers are employed by BryanLGH and managed by Lincoln Orthopaedic Center (LOC). LOC also provides the expertise of Dr. Doug Tewes, who is licensed and accredited through ImPACT Concussion Testing to read concussion tests. The cost associated with the athletic trainer program is incurred by Butler County Health Care Center.
The athletic trainer is an integrated part of the health care delivery team in the community. The trainer is there to ensure that the student athlete’s health needs are addressed in a manner that keeps his or her primary care provider, parents, and coaches informed. The athletic trainer is available for First Aide/ CPR, injury prevention, assessment and evaluation, taping, stretching, and on-site rehabilitation. “It is good to have a professional and knowledgeable trainer on staff to treat injuries quickly and keep them from becoming long-term problem,” explains Ron Mimick, Aquinas Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. “The student athlete is affected by the injury for a shorter amount of time because of quicker detection.”
The athletic training program includes ImPACT Concussion Testing. Initial ImPACT Concussion Testing is completed on all of the student athletes. A student athlete will be retested after an injury or concussion symptoms occur. The athletic trainers are able to perform ImPACT Concussion Testing and directly send the test LOC to have the results determined.
Coaches and parents have access to injury monitoring and tracking software through the athletic training program. The software reduces uncertainty surrounding when players can participate in an activity and when they need to recover. It also keeps to parents informed of any issues that the student athlete brings to the athletic trainers attention. “We are excited to be apart of the Butler County community and offer the student athletes this one-of-a kind service,” explains Corey Courtney, Director of Sports Medicine at BryanLGH and Lincoln Orthopaedic Center and Head Athletic Trainer for the Lincoln Stars and Lincoln Saltdogs. “Being able to participate in daily practices and regular games, allows the athletic trainer to know each student athlete and their family on a personal level. Because the athletic trainers are certified in First Aide/ CPR, they also serve as first responder in an emergency situation.” |

Many people only think about a hospital when they need care for an acute illness or injury. It is usually during that encounter that they appreciate the convenience of having a hospital close to home that can provide services to address most of their health care needs. The fact is, the same hospital is making a positive impact for each resident of Butler County and surrounding communities whether they choose to use the hospital or not.
Butler County Health Care Center, like most hospitals, provides many economic advantages to the areas it serves. The hospital employs one hundred and eighteen employees. Those employees directly benefit from the salaries and benefits that are paid to them for their work; however others benefit as well. A 2004 study conducted by the Nebraska Center for Rural Health Research stated that “One job created in the health care sector of Butler County would lead to the creation of another 0.44 job in other sectors of the county’s economy.” This would indicate that there are an additional 52 jobs in Butler County because the hospital exists. Likewise the dollars earned in health care has an impact on the dollars earned in other sectors of the economy. For every $1.00 earned in health care in Butler County, another $0.37 is earned in other sectors. The $4.6 million in salaries that the hospital employees were paid last year resulted in another $1.7 million being paid to other individuals in the county. The study went on to say that for every $1.00 spent in the health care sector of Butler County, another $0.65 would be spent in other sectors in the county. This translates into $7 million being spent in the county because of the $10.8 million that was spent at the hospital.
The hospital along with the two nursing homes, two physician clinics, a chiropractic clinic, two pharmacies, and other health related entities directly and indirectly accounts for over 19% of the Butler County’s total employment and over 20% of its total income. Health care is important to economic health of the county. This information coupled with the knowledge that many individuals and businesses look at the health care services available in a community before they relocate make maintaining strong health care services a priority in any small community.
Butler County Health Care Center has been providing quality health care to the area for 38 years. The facility was built with a $1.1 million bond issue, and has been operated without tax assistance ever since. It has grown into a facility with a full compliment of services, a sound financial track record, and a significant contributor to the economic stability in the county and surrounding communities. |
