BCHCC Hosts 8th Annual Pink Games

BCHCC Hosts 8th Annual Pink Games

Monday, September 10, 2018

Future Generations Health Care Foundation was awarded a grant by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsely Charitable Trust to update mammography services at Butler County Health Care Center in 2011.  The grant funds were used to purchase a digital mammography unit.  A requirement for receiving the grant funds was to invest a portion of the funds in marketing routine mammograms to the community.  Butler County Health Care Center teamed up with Aquinas Catholic, David City Public and East Butler High Schools to form the Pink Games in order to raise community awareness of breast cancer and encourage women to schedule a routine mammogram.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women and the second most frequent cause of female cancer deaths. Between 2011 and 2015, 6,714 Nebraska women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (another 1,427 were diagnosed with in situ breast cancer) and 1,174 women died from breast cancer. Since 1990, the rate of breast cancer deaths in Nebraska and the US has declined significantly. Recent declines in the rate of breast cancer diagnoses have been attributed to the decreasing use of post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy, early detection through screening, and increased awareness.  While all forms of cancer deserve our attention; breast cancer is one form of cancer that can be screened for early detection through the diagnostic service of mammography offered at Butler County Health Care Center.

Breast Cancer awareness is most prevalent during the month of October, however due to a limited number of home softball games and cross country meets in our local schools, the Pink Games begin in September and continue throughout October in order to include all four fall sports.  The proceeds from the shirt sales each year are donated to the American Cancer Society during the Relay for Life of Butler County.  Butler County Health Care Center has raised over $8,800 since starting the Pink Games.  The American Cancer Society uses funds to conduct research, share expert information, support patients, and spread the word about prevention for all types of cancers.
