Back-to-school season is here! New schedules, busy mornings and homework can take some getting used to, but a few simple routines can help make the transition easier for the whole family. Check out these tips for creating calm, consistent before- and after-school routines that can help reduce stress and set kids up for a great school year!
Before school:
- Set a routine that you do in the same order each morning: get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, and pack backpacks. Begin on the first day of school.
- Have the routine posted in the kitchen so kids and parents can review it each morning.
- Use dry erase checklists for younger children.
- Plan to leave for school a few minutes early.
After school:
- Allow kids 30-60 minutes to decompress after school. (Have a snack, play outdoors, or rest, before starting homework.)
- Set an evening homework routine beginning the first week of school.
- Have children pack their backpack for the next day when homework is completed, and set it in the same place each day.
- Encourage regular bedtimes based on the age of the child.
- Set something simple “extras” to look forward to each week:
- An after-school trip to the park on Friday
- Extra 10 minutes with Mom/Dad at the end of the day
- Having dinner outside
- A shared activity
- Reading a bedtime story together as a family
